Leadership development
Overview
Leaders of modern organisations have a difficult task. They need to analyse and make sense of the position of their organisation within the context of its overall environment and market and set a clear vision and direction for the future. Then they need to convert the overall strategic direction into specific plans and targets and to acquire the necessary resources and deploy them effectively in pursuit of the chosen goals. They must construct efficient and effective organisations, systems, processes that will support and not hinder the overall effort. Most importantly, they have to monitor and motivate all those involved to ensure they are aligned in the same direction and behave in a way which is consistent.

The tasks that a modern leader has to perform require a wide range of behavioural as well as technical skills and above all the flexibility to adapt to ever changing situations.

Effective leaders are self-aware leaders; they understand clearly how their own behaviour impacts on all the people they deal with. Our approach to leadership development therefore is based on raising self awareness by providing challenging experiences, feedback and reflection followed by the creation of a personal development plan to ensure that new skills and changed behaviours are tested and adopted.

Objectives
Eurians offers a range of developmental activities and processes to enhance the capability of current and future leaders and to help them adopt styles and behaviours which support the strategic aspirations of the organisation. We focus on building personal leadership qualities by providing challenging experiences followed by feedback and guided reflection as a way of building self-awareness and encouraging leaders to manage their own learning.

Description
Every leadership intervention is designed around the specific context and requirement of the client. Sometimes we may challenge your existing thinking and approach to leadership development in order to arrive at the most effective solutions for your organisation. In different situations we offer clients different solutions ranging from a coaching intervention for a key leader through to a major leadership programme for the whole senior leader population containing a range of different modules lasting over a period of a year or more. Typical interventions might include some or all of the following elements:
  • Understand the overall context of the business and the strategic direction chosen. Where appropriate we can help with the definition or refinement of the vision, mission and business plans;
  • Define or refine a leadership competency framework to establish the skills and behaviours required from leaders in order to move the organisation down its chosen path;
  • Audit and benchmark existing leadership skills and capabilities within the organisation to identify gaps and development requirements;
  • Design challenging leadership experiences to develop the required competencies. Typically this maybe within the context of an action learning group where a group of leaders are challenged with a task, or a series of tasks, to complete. This might involve the resolution of a business problem or the provision of a service to the local community, or as part of an overseas aid programme. For example, this could involve environmental projects or managing the construction of schools or the digging of wells in a developing country;
  • Design and deliver a leadership programme with a range of different elements in it and building over a period of time. Typically this might include:
  •   o the use of various questionnaires and psychometrics to raise self awareness and an understanding of the organisational culture
    o training modules covering such leadership skills as coaching skills for managers, personal impact, and motivating people
    o facilitated business workshops working on specific key business issues
    o ‘masterclasses’ in which a high profile business expert runs a learning session on a current business issue
    o social and business related activities to build contacts and networks within the community of leaders
    o leadership exercises and activities to enable leaders to experiment with new approaches and receive feedback from colleagues and facilitators
    o the creation of personal development plan (PDPs) for each leader with follow up coaching to challenge and support each leader as they implement personal change.
